Arthur Meighen always went down fighting, usually on matters of principle. As Borden's successor in troubled postwar Canada, he led the Conservatives into a hopeless, losing battle in 1921. Five years later he became prime minister again during a constitutional crisis and was out-manoeuvered by Mackenzie King and his position rejected by the voters. Meighen always thought he had been right to take strong stands on issues. He finally left politics in despair about democracy because the people had not seen fit to agree with him.
